Overall Purpose of the Job
The Cleaning and Catering Assistant is responsible for both the general cleaning of the premises and the support of catering operations. This includes cleaning duties to maintain the school’s premises in accordance with specified standards and assisting with food preparation, serving meals, and ensuring a safe and clean kitchen and dining environment.
Main duties and responsibilities
Cleaning Responsibilities:
- Vacuum carpeted areas of the building as needed.
- Mop and buff vinyl and/or hard floor areas of the building.
- Clean toilet areas, ensuring hygiene standards are maintained.
- Polish glass and brass work throughout the building as required.
- Collect and remove rubbish and waste material to authorized disposal points.
- Safely use and handle cleaning materials and equipment, adhering to COSHH guidelines and BIC specifications.
- Work in a safe manner, ensuring the safety of oneself and others.
- Display appropriate signage to alert building occupants to potential hazards during cleaning operations.
- Report any defects, deficiencies, or health and safety-related issues to the supervisor promptly.
- Remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity or incidents to the supervisor immediately.
- Assist with the safe storage and organization of cleaning materials and equipment.
- Undertake job-related training as necessary.
- Assist with general cleaning tasks for both internal and external areas, including litter picking and clearing drains.
- Be flexible to assist with other duties as required.
Catering Responsibilities:
- Be trained in the correct use of all catering equipment.
- Assist in preparing the dining and service areas to an appropriate standard.
- Serve food and beverages at specified times and in appropriate quantities.
- Assist with food preparation tasks such as simple cooking and assembling meals.
- Help with setting up dining furniture and ensure the service areas are maintained clean and tidy.
- Clean all areas of the servery, salad bar, beverage machines, and kitchen preparation areas in accordance with the cleaning schedule.
- Wash up cutlery, crockery, trays, and light kitchen equipment.
- Operate serving tills and handle cashier duties in line with management instructions.
- Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining room as required.
- Comply with Health and Safety at work regulations, ensuring safe food handling and hygiene practices.

Qualifications and Experience
- Previous experience in cleaning or catering roles is desirable.
- Familiarity with the use of cleaning equipment and catering tools is a plus.
- Basic knowledge of health and safety legislation, particularly in cleaning and food handling.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Good work record with a strong sense of responsibility and reliability.
Additional Notes:
You may be required to work outside normal working hours on a rota basis to cover school events, such as parents' evenings and sports days.
